The HSE has published its latest annual statistics for the 2013/2014 period which show:
- 133 fatal injuries – a fall from 150 the previous year
- 77,593 other injuries reported under The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR). That equates to 304.6 injuries per 100,000 employees
- An estimated two million people in 2013/14 suffering from an illness they believed was caused or made worse by current or past work
- 28.2 million days were lost to work-related ill health or injury, split down into 23.5 million for work-related ill health and 4.7 million for workplace injuries
- Workplace injuries and new cases of work-related ill health are estimated to cost the economy £14.2 billion p.a.
In terms of enforcement:
- 551 cases were prosecuted by the HSE in England and Wales
- 13,790 enforcement notices were issued by all enforcing authorities
